Andrew Garfield has opened up about his time as Spider-Man, saying the character's story was "compromised" which broke his heart.

The Social Network star played the radioactive web-slinger in two films - 2012's The Amazing Spider-Man and its 2014 sequel.

Although the films collectively pulled in over US$1 billion at the global box office and weren't savaged by mainstream critics, they weren't well received by many comic book fans and pale in comparison to many of the iconic Marvel Cinematic Universe films.

"There's something that happened with that experience for me where story and character were not actually top of the priority list, ultimately," Garfield told Variety.

"And I found that really, really tricky. I signed up to serve the story and to serve this incredible character I'd been dressing as since I was three. And then it gets compromised, and it breaks my heart. I got heartbroken a little bit."

He made the comments in a Variety feature with Amy Adams, who has also starred in superhero movies, and likewise felt heartbroken after the experience.

"I've signed on to things for one reason, and they've turned into something else, and it's always a little heartbreaking, because you have to let go of that ideal. It's kind of part of growing up - you have to mature through that," she says.

Adams featured in the generally panned Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice earlier this year, but also starred in critically acclaimed Arrival and Nocturnal Animals.

While Garfield currently has no superhero movies on his future schedule, Adams is set to reprise her role as Lois Lane in Justice League next year.
