X Factor votes did count - TV3

There was more to celebrate today for The X Factor New Zealand winner Jackie Thomas. Her debut single 'It's Worth It' went straight to number one on iTunes.

But last night's programme did have off notes, including some viewers left thinking their votes hadn't been counted. But the programme's makers say no need to worry.

Facebook favourite and X Factor prince of Palmy Benny Tipene was the first of the three to fall. In hometown Palmerston North there were howls of protest and lots of sad, sad faces.

Then there were two: Whenua Patawai and Jackie Thomas.

Another now legendary Dominic Bowden pause was pipped at the post, and the stage graphics stole his thunder moments before her name was read out – Jackie.

Thomas' family mobbed the stage, having flown up from Greymouth to be there. Back home, she was the heroine of the hour.

Two hours sleep and dozens of radio and TV appearances to contend with, Thomas couldn't stop smiling today.

"It's such a cool feeling," she says. "I had to jump awake because I had so little sleep!"

But it is time to put the controversies to bed. Did she lip-synch her winner's single?

"No way," she says. "That winner's single is such a hard song to sing! I was really belting it out and was so worried before I went on, pacing. Will I hit the notes? But I think I did well."

But the voting did have issues. With more than 6000 votes cast online every minute, The X Factor voting app crashed. Text voters also had problems.

The programme makers issued a statement insisting all the votes did get included, despite the on-screen message, and assuring us the count is now being independently audited, at which point the final percentage will be released. They also say Thomas was well ahead right the way through.

"Greymouth, I miss you guys," says Thomas. "I am going to start recording my album, but as soon as I get a few days I will be back to see you guys."

So for the X Factor winner, it's straight to work – into the studio tonight to start on her debut album, set for release next month.
