Xia Jing teams up with NZTrio for 3 performances

Chinese, Vietnamese and Korean communities around the world have been celebrating the Mid-Autumn Festival and in New Zealand, it coincides with a very special meeting of musical minds.

World-renowned Chinese musician Xia Jing has teamed up with Kiwis NZTrio for a series of performances with an oriental twist.

Even if you've heard of the 2500-year-old guzheng, chances are you haven't heard it like this.

"It's something very new and fresh-sounding, but it has this very great energy but an utter beauty that sounds like east meets west, for lack of a better phrase," says NZTrio's Sarah Watkins.

Xia now lives in the US and has been playing the guzheng for 24 years. She says the collaboration has helped her discover her ways to play.

And that goes both ways.

"We're always looking at new opportunities to collaborate, especially with different cultures, because then we start to learn about our own instruments and how to use them in different ways," says NZTrio's Ashley Brown.

The musicians have only been working together for a week on their three New Zealand performances - one on Friday night in wellington and two towards the end of the month in Auckland's Q-Theatre.

It's meant a busy few days and it's not goodbye after that - NZTrio will be visiting Xia in Beijing in October.
