Young Kiwi hip-hoppers take on the world

Auckland hip-hop dance team Rebellious is about to embark on the trip of a lifetime, heading to Austria to compete in the Hip-Hop United World Championships.

The side qualified first from the Hip-Hop Unite competition in Wellington, but the road to qualifying wasn't always easy.

"It should be fun trying against other countries other than New Zealand, and we're just going to enjoy the competition," says dancer Mischa Inglis.

Rebellious was only formed in January but they've wasted no time in making a name for themselves on the New Zealand hip-hop scene.

Most of the year so far has been spent refining their routine.

But the road to Wellington wasn't as straight forward as you'd think.

After originally placing first at the national championships, the crew were quickly stripped of that win.

"We were at prelims and we were placed first and then bumped down to fifth, and we had to do a bit fighting do find out why that was, but the girls worked really, really hard," says studio owner Kiri Whitford-Joynt.

They'll put that result down to bad counting Ms Whitford-Joynt says the hours of training will benefit the girls in the long term.

"We are learning about hard work and commitment and each other, connecting together and trying to work hard as a team, not as an individual."

No matter how they place at the World Champs, just being there will be a dream come true for these girls - they now just need to get through a 32-hour flight.
