Watchmen filmmaker Zack Snyder is set to direct a Star Wars film loosely based on Seven Samurai, according to online reports.

Vulture.com reports that while Snyder is not directing Star Wars: Episode VII, he is developing a separate Lucasfilm project with lightsabre-wielding Jedi replacing the katana-wielding ronin of Akira Kurosawa’s classic film.

Badassdigest.com reports that a Star Wars comic from Marvel entitled Eight Against A World had a storyline very similar to Seven Samurai, with Han Solo and Chewbacca assembling a ragtag group of heroes to protect moisture farmers from bandits.

The title of Snyder’s Star Wars film has not yet been announced and Vulture says that production on the film would begin after Disney starts on its planned 2015 release of Episode VII.

Recently filmmaker Guillermo Del Toro confirmed that he turned down directing Episode VII, which is being written by Michael Arndt (Toy Story 3).
