Blindfold the key to winning rock-paper-scissors

There aren't many games where you can increase your chances of winning by closing your eyes.

Turns out, rock-paper-scissors – or janken – is one of them.

A study at the University College of London shows that when one of the players is blindfolded, not only are there significantly less draws, but the blindfolded player usually wins, reports New Scientist magazine.

The study's authors say it is probably because we have a subconscious desire to imitate others, an urge that is "beyond our control".

So if, unlike Lisa Simpson, you aren't facing an opponent that always plays rock, try sticking on a blindfold instead.
