The man who filmed a humpback whale leaping out of the water and striking the front of his boat says he’s surprised he managed to catch the moment on camera.
Laurent Lebihan and his girlfriend were off the coast of the Hawaiian island of Maui when their canoe was struck, The Telegraph reports.
While the couple had gone out to look for whales, Mr Lebihan says the one which swam up from underneath their canoe caught them “totally off guard”.
“I'm surprised I held onto the camera,” he said.
He later remarked that they were lucky the whale wasn’t any bigger.
“Good thing it was an adolescent whale,” he said.
