The first Antarctica flight of the season takes off in just a few hours.

This year the RNZAF will open the season with a Boeing 757 passenger flight.

Eighteen Antarctica New Zealand staff will be on the flight, along with personnel heading to the United States' McMurdo Station. They'll be joining 10 Kiwi staff who have spent the winter on the icy continent.

Antarctica New Zealand's operation's manager Graeme Ayres is among those heading down, and says the arrival of 18 new faces is going to test the tight-knit unit.
