A Little Blue penguin wandered onto State Highway 2 near Wellington this morning.

Several members of the public called the police after seeing the penguin huddled against the median barrier on Hutt Road just outside Petone, around 7:30am.

A police spokeswoman says the Little Blue likely wandered onto the oceanfront road from Wellington Harbour.

It was safely rescued and returned to the sea and is so far showing no signs of becoming the next Happy Feet, a wayward Emperor penguin who took up residence on Peka Peka Beach for a time in 2011.
