Manukura, the rare white kiwi was taken to the University of Otago School of Medicine at Wellington Hospital to have a second stone removed from its gizzard today.

Wellington Zoo’s Dr Lisa Argilla was assisted by urologist Mr Rod Studd during the procedure.

A technique usually used to shatter kidney stones was used in the procedure and the remnants were then removed in the same way sticks were removed from emperor penguin Happy Feet.

The white kiwi is currently recovering at Wellington Zoo.
