The chances of seeing the supermoon next week just got cloudier.

Tuesday's supermoon will be the closest full moon to the Earth since January 1948.

Meteorologist Claire Flynn says bad weather next week could hinder an chance of seeing the moon.

"Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday is all looking like there'll be a fair bit of rain around the country," she says.

Ms Flynn says the best chances of seeing the moon will be in Marlborough, before it clouds over later on at night.

"Maybe also Hawke's Bay, although they will also have some high cloud around, so chances aren't looking that great on Tuesday unfortunately."

The moon won't be as big again until November 2034.
