Dramatic footage has emerged of the enormous rock slide that occurred on Aoraki Mt Cook last week.

Neil Wiltshire continued climbing elsewhere in the national park, and didn’t realise what he had captured on his Go Pro camera from Plateau Hut until he came out of the mountains and viewed it on his computer.

Mr Wiltshire and 14 others watched in shock as Aoraki Mt Cook’s biggest landslide in 20 years rolled out across the plateau.

He says he initially thought they were out of harm’s way, until the enormous mass of rock and ice shifted course towards them.

GNS scientists have assessed the rock slide and are confident it is stable, but for now the plateau remains closed.
