A couple walking along a South African beach last week made a gruesome discovery – a huge crocodile head.

Neale and Brigitte Cary-Smith found the decapitated beast – sans body – at St Lucia, north of Durban.

"You can see where the shark has actually ripped it," Mr Cary-Smith says in a video that's taking the internet by storm.

"On the side here in the flesh you can see the shark teeth. It's quite normal for sharks to swim here in the sea at St Lucia and it's also very normal for very large sharks to be very close to the shore."

It's not certain how the crocodile met its end, with others suggesting poachers or a hippopotamus could be to blame. But Mr Cary-Smith says the head is the most valuable part of a crocodile, so poachers are unlikely to be responsible.
