Video: Pianist's song to save the Arctic

The one thing about the Arctic, aside from the still whiteness, is the deafening silence.

But the latest Greenpeace protest, involving a world-renowned pianist, has broken that calm with a haunting composition and a plea to save the Arctic.

A video uploaded by the environmental activists shows Ludovico Einaudi performing on a floating platform with a grand piano.

As he plays the specially composed 'Elegy for the Arctic', ice can be seen calving from a glacier almost in time with the music.

Greenpeace ship Arctic Sunrise left the Netherlands around two weeks ago, picking up Mr Einaudi and his piano for his "most challenging performance yet".

The timing of the performance coincides with an OSPAR Commission meeting in Tenerife, Spain, to consider a proposal to protect 10 percent of the Arctic Ocean -- an area roughly the size of the UK.

The commission involves 15 governments and the EU, aiming to protect the marine environment of the northeast Atlantic.
