Hillary Clinton touched down in Christchurch early this afternoon and was greeted by Mayor Bob Parker, Earthquake Recovery Minister Gerry Brownlee and heavy rain.

After disembarking her United States aircraft, Mrs Clinton travelled in a 19 car motorcade to the Antarctica New Zealand base.

A presentation was held at the US Antarctic Centre where she praised the efforts of staff from both New Zealand and the US who are working on the Antarctic programme in Christchurch.

She was greeted by chairperson of the Antarctic Centre Rob Fenwick.

She also presented a map that had the newly named weighpoints on the flightpoints from Christchurch to McMurdo Sound in Antarctica.

The weighpoints have been named after the eleven dogs and ponies that went with Scott and Amundsen took on their journey to Ross Island 100 years ago.

Continuing the thread of humour that had accompanied this trip, Mrs Clinton asked Mayor Bob Parker what his mayoral chains were called.

To which Parker answered “bling”. Clinton then quipped "I like your bling'', the joke well received by the presentation crowd.

Mrs Clinton now heads to the Christchurch Town Hall where she will speak to a 2000 strong crowd.
