Political commentator Chris Trotter does not believe Labour can win this year's general election.
Mr Trotter spoke to Firstline this morning, making his opinion quite clear.
Opinion polls indicate Labour is about 30 percent behind National, but Labour Party leader Phil Goff says they also show voters believe Labour's policies are the right ones.
Deputy Prime Minister Bill English said today he believes the gap between the two main parties will narrow as the election nears.
Mr Trotter says Mr Goff has been held back by a caucus which does not support for his plans, refuses to replace him as party leader.
