Hostel director Eli Roth's new film The Green Inferno has opened in North American cinemas and is an ode to the notorious cannibal subgenre of exploitation films.

In the film, a group of activists travel to the Amazon jungle to protest deforestation, but after their plane crashes they end up on the dinner menu of a local tribe.

Roth is clearly a big fan of the cannibal subgenre and has talked about his six favourite cannibal films in the above YouTube video.

"The mother of all cannibal films is Cannibal Holocaust by Ruggero Deodato," Roth told Entertainment Weekly.

"Cannibal Ferox, which was released in the US as Make Them Die Slowly - that is another fantastic one. If you like them even sleazier, with a bit more sex, I would recommend Joe D'Amato's Emanuelle and the Last Cannibals."

The other three films Roth talks about in the video are Last Cannibal World, The Mountain of the Cannibal God and Massacre in Dinosaur Valley.
