Making a Murderer subject Steven Avery may be behind bars for murder, but it hasn't stopped him from finding love.

According to People magazine, Avery is now engaged to Las Vegas legal secretary Lynn Hartman.

The pair first met in person last week but have been dating for eight months.

"I'm happy," Avery told the Daily Mail, saying: "She treats me decent, she loves me.

"I just want to be happy and enjoy my life. I think I did enough time."

Ms Hartman says they plan to get hitched not long after he is released.

Avery was drawn into the spotlight in December after the release of documentary series Making a Murderer on Netflix.

He was convicted for the 2005 murder of photographer Teresa Halbach, but the show casts doubt on whether he committed the crime.

Instead, compressing more than 10 years' worth of filming into as many hours, it supports the theory Avery may have been framed by authorities.

He was set to sue Mantiowoc County for US$36 million after being wrongfully convicted for rape and jailed for 18 years.

Avery's nephew, Brendan Dassey, is set to walk free after his conviction in the case was quashed.

Avery has maintained his innocence in the murder.
