More than 40 years since it first aired on television, a Fawlty Towers stage show is heading to Auckland, Christchurch and Wellington in 2017.

The production was adapted for the stage by John Cleese himself, and includes some of his personal favourite moments from episodes 'Communication Problems', 'The Germans' and 'Basil and the Rat', interweaving them to finish with a hydra-headed punchline that combines elements of all three.

A younger cast recreates characters from the beloved TV show, with Australian actors Stephen Hall and Blazey Best as Basil and Sybil.

Cleese is said to have handpicked the actors and overseen rehearsals.

Fawlty Towers - Live runs at Auckland's Bruce Mason Theatre from February 3 to 18, Christchurch's Isaac Theatre Royal from February 21 to March 4 and Wellington's St James Theatre from March 7 to 19.

Whether or not riffraff will be allowed in has not been announced.
