British filmmaker Guy Ritchie is in talks to bring Disney classic Aladdin back to the big screen with a live-action movie.

The Snatch director would be reteaming with his Sherlock Holmes producer Dan Lin on the project, which has been written by John August (Dark Shadows).

The 1992 film was part of Disney's animation renaissance and retold the Middle Eastern-set folk tale of a young man granted three wishes by a genie trapped in a lamp and the evil wizard who covets the magical object.

It was the highest-grossing movie of the year and won Oscars, for Best Score and Best Song.

Following the recent controversy around 'white-washing' Hollywood films - the casting of white actors to play non-white characters in films such as Gods of Egypt and Ghost in the Shell - it will be interesting to see who Disney casts in Aladdin.

Ritchie's next film will be King Arthur: Legend of the Sword, which is released in March, 2017.
