Inside Auckland's iconic museum, a very different sort of exhibition is on display.

The walls are lined with the albums of some of New Zealand's most well-known musicians, taking Kiwis on a trip through our past and our present.

Che Fu has been on the music scene long enough to be used to receiving high praise. But even he feels a little uneasy about the pedestal he's been put on in the New Zealand Music Exhibition at Auckland Museum.

"I find it very weird to see my face, my mug, at these sorts of things, but it's very humbling and also a huge honour to be amongst so many iconic New Zealand musicians."

The exhibition features New Zealand music royalty - Lorde, Savage, The Exponents, the Finn brothers - the list goes on, and takes visitors back through seven decades.

"I think it was three years in the making, so this ticks all my boxes," says Che Fu.

Kiwis know Che Fu for his numerous hits, among the most popular 'Fade Away'. Now you can help put that masterpiece together.

A recording studio is set up where you can help DJ Sir-Vere mix together that very song. Che Fu himself doesn't need that much help though.

For the man who's done just about everything there is to do on the New Zealand music scene, he knows the future looks good, and you only have to go a few metres into this exhibition to see why.

"When I first walk into the exhibition, boom, that's the first things you see - Lorde off the top turnbuckle dropping an elbow, letting everybody know. I think that's great. She's young. She's doing it and she's very capable."

Che Fu is currently recording some back-up vocals for friend Ria Hall and he's continuing to perform.

But you only need to look around the exhibition to see he's already well and truly made his mark.
