The first look at Gary Oldman as Winston Churchill in a new film about the iconic British Prime Minister has been released.

The Dark Knight star's likeness to Britain's legendary World War II leader in the image is remarkable, representing an impressive transformation with the latest prosthetic technology.

The upcoming film is entitled Darkest Hour and will be directed by Joe Wright, the filmmaker behind Hanna and Atonement.

It will focus on Churchill's troubled time shortly after taking office, when he faced an agonising decision: sign a humiliating treaty with Nazi Germany, or face all-out war with a vastly superior enemy.

To make matters worse, Churchill's efforts were marred by scepticism of his leadership ability from England's King George VI and even his very own party.

Alongside Oldman, Darkest Hour also stars Lily James (Cinderella, Downton Abbey), John Hurt (Alien, Harry Potter), Ben Mendelsohn (Animal Kingdom, Star Wars: Rogue One) and Kristin Scott Thomas (The English Patient, Only God Forgives).

It will be in cinemas in November 2017.
