MediaWorks has lifted the curtain on The Project, TV3's new 7pm weeknight show that will replace Story.

The Project will combine current affairs and entertainment in a unique way, promising audiences an intelligent, informative and engaging half-hour mix of the stories that matter from New Zealand and around the world.

The hosts, who will be announced soon, will be joined each night by a variety of panelists to discuss the stories of the day - including guest appearances by award-winning broadcaster Paul Henry.

Panelists will include Newshub journalists and presenters, comedians, sporting stars, politicians and other notable New Zealanders from a range of fields.

"The Project is news delivered differently," says Hal Crawford, MediaWorks' chief news officer.

"At its core will be strong, compelling storytelling. We'll be looking for new ways to explore issues that resonate with New Zealanders, bringing a fresh or unique perspective."

Crawford says the show will build on the momentum created by the Story team, many of whom will continue to deliver incredible stories with The Project.

"We are sorry to see Story go but believe The Project is the right format for this timeslot," he says.

MediaWorks' chief content officer Andrew Szusterman says the new show's format has seen strong success in Australia and the company can't wait to bring New Zealand its own version.

"We have the best news service in the country, and the best comedy talent across the board, so the opportunity to create a hybrid programme that really resonates with viewers was too good to miss," says Szusterman.

The Project will launch in early 2017.
