The first full trailer for The Fate of the Furious shows Dominic Toretto turning on the rest of his crew, and a car vs submarine battle.

Toretto, played by Vin Diesel, is the blockbuster franchise's main character and has always talked about family being the most important thing in the world. By "family", he means both those related to him and his crew of renegade outlaws.

In the just-released three-minute trailer, Toretto turns against his family, working with a new villain portrayed by Charlize Theron, for reasons unknown.

Another surprise twist the trailer reveals is Jason Statham's villainous character from the last Fast & Furious film joins forces with the very crew that brought him down, in order to handle the Toretto menace.

Paul Walker, another central character in the franchise who died in a car accident in 2013, features briefly in a photograph in the trailer.

In addition to the shocking character revelations, franchise staples are showcased, including car races, scantily clad women and epic vehicular warfare.

One scene has an enormous wrecking ball used to destroy a fleet of vehicles while another sees a large submarine busting through ice and attacking the Fast & Furious crew, who are driving overhead.

The trailer was premiered at a fan event in New York's Times Square, with some of the film's stars there in person.

A movie poster, also revealed on Monday, features prominently the tagline "Family no more", along with Diesel and Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson turning on each other.

The Fate of the Furious will be released in April, 2017.
