Rambo star Sylvester Stallone says he is "incredibly flattered" by reports Donald Trump wanted him to serve in his administration, but he's saying no.

The '80s action icon was being eyed by the President-elect for a senior position in the arts, according to several publications.

Stallone says in a statement given to media he's "incredibly flattered to have been suggested to be involved with the National Endowment of the Arts.

"However I believe I could be more effective by bringing national attention to returning military personnel in an effort to find gainful employment, suitable housing and financial assistance these heroes respectfully deserve."

The Rocky star last got into politics in 2008, when he supported John McCain's failed campaign against Barack Obama.

In an interview with Variety in January, Stallone said he considered a political career, but "about five minutes later, I came to my senses".

In the same interview he said he "loved" Mr Trump, describing him as "a great Dickensian character" and "bigger than life", but laughing about how that may not be the best for someone "running the world".
