Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson has published a candid, touching tribute to his father Rocky, acknowledging how tough his life has been.

The Moana star posted the note of thanks on Instagram, along with a photo of a new Ford SUV he'd given him.

Johnson calls his father a "minimalist" who never asks for anything and explained to his followers how he became that way with a brutally honest story.

"My dad's dad died when he was 13," says Johnson in the post, before explaining Rocky's mother kicked him out of home shortly afterward around Christmas.

"He was 13 years old and now homeless. That f**ked up true story happened in Amherst, Nova Scotia, Canada in 1954.

"Every Christmas, I always think about that story and my dad having every odd stacked against him at 13, but he fought through it and still made something of himself."

He goes on to express appreciation for how hard his father was on him as a teen, saying it "made a man outta me [sic]".

Johnson has made no secret of the tougher periods in his own life. In 1995, he claims to have had just US$7 to his name, and was wrestling in flea markets for US$40 per night a year later.

In 2016, Forbes named him the highest-paid actor of the year, with a reported income of US$64.5 million.
