Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt have agreed to keep their divorce proceedings private.

The Mr & Mrs Smith stars had looked to be heading to a bitter divorce.

But Jolie and Pitt have released a joint statement to media, saying their divorce details will be kept under wraps to protect their children's privacy.

"The parties and their counsel have signed agreements to preserve the privacy rights of their children and family by keeping all court documents confidential and engaging a private judge to make any necessary legal decisions and to facilitate the expeditious resolution of any remaining issues,'' the statement reads.

"The parents are committed to act as a united front to effectuate recovery and reunification.''

Private judges are being increasingly used in the US, generally by wealthy people in family law cases, civil cases and breach of contract disputes.

They have the same authority as public judges but all personal information remains private, with the hearings held outside of the public court system. The process is often quicker and clients can select a judge and schedule court dates to suit their schedules.

Jolie cited "irreconcilable differences" when she filed to end the marriage in September last year.
