Television star Ellen DeGeneres has won a record 20th People's Choice Award, which she celebrated by expressing her love for mashed potatoes.

The Ellen host won three trophies at the US People's Choice Awards this week, bringing her lifetime total to an impressive 20.

Ellen was overjoyed as she accepted the honour from pop star Justin Timberlake, but her acceptance speech took a strange turn.

"I got here like seconds before it started and I was thinking, 'I love mashed potatoes'," she said as the audience roared with cheers.

"Don't you love mashed potatoes? I should have them more often, especially when they're creamy and have no lumps in them."

While up on the stage at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, Ellen was flanked by two rows of 10 men in suits, each holding one of her Waterford crystal People's Choice Award trophies.

"Seventeen, I get it. Eighteen, sure. Nineteen, I can see that. But 20 is outrageous," she said.

The awards she won at this ceremony were for Favourite Daytime TV Host, Favourite Animated Movie Voice (for Finding Dory) and Favourite Comedic Collaboration (with Britney Spears).
