La La Land breaks record with huge Golden Globes haul

La La Land has dominated the 74th annual Golden Globe Awards, winning in every category it was nominated in.

Damien Chazelle's musical won a total of seven awards - the most any single film has ever won at a Golden Globes ceremony.

Before the Sunday (local time) ceremony at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles, the most successful films were 1978's Midnight Express and 1975's One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, which each won a total of six.

Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling both won for their acting roles in La La Land, with it also winning Best Film (Musical or Comedy), Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Original Score and Best Original Song.

The top television awards went to Atlanta, which upset Veep and Transparent for Best Comedy, while The Crown was named king of the dramas after beating stiff competition from Game of Thrones, Stranger Things and Westworld.

Moonlight won Best Film (Drama), while the dramatic film top acting awards went to Isabelle Huppert (Elle) and Casey Affleck (Manchester by the Sea).

TV star Jimmy Fallon hosted the ceremony for the first time and got things off to an awkward start as his teleprompter failed.

Fallon shuffled uncomfortably and asked "What do we do here?" while waiting for his autocue to work.

Meryl Streep was honoured with the Cecil B. Demille Award, prompting her to give what Newshub's Kate Rodger calls the best speech of the show.

"Hollywood is crawling with foreigners and outsiders. If we kick them all out, you'll have nothing to watch but football and Mixed Martial Arts - which are not the arts," she stated, in a passionate response to US President-elect Donald Trump's rhetoric.

Streep finished in tears, paying tribute to her friend Carrie Fisher, closing her speech by quoting the late actress: "Take your broken heart, make it into art".

Sarah Paulson claimed an early win for her role in The People v. O.J. Simpson.

The true story was nominated for five awards, but only won two, losing the others to The Night Manager.

Amongst all the stunning outfits, the cutest duo of the show was Dev Patel and Sunny Pawar, who charmed viewers while introducing a clip from Lion.

Before the teleprompter fail, the show's broadcast kicked off with a star-studded, pre-recorded song-and-dance homage to La La Land, foreshadowing its huge success.

Once his opening monologue was underway, Fallon wasted no time in making jokes about Trump - poking fun at how he lost the popular vote and that the award ballots were being tabulated by Russian President Vladimir Putin.

He wasn't the only speaker to bring up the former Celebrity Apprentice host, with Hugh Laurie joking he was accepting an award at the last ever Golden Globes, in reference to the incoming president.
