Goodbye Pork Pie reboot hits screens

The classic 80s film Goodbye Pork Pie has been given a makeover, complete with a new cast and a new yellow Mini.

Neither stars Ashleigh Cummings and James Rolleston were born when the original film came out, so this Pork Pie is fresh out of the oven.

But 40-year-old Dean O'Gorman, who stars as Jon, says there will be plenty for the old guard to sink their teeth into too.

"The backbone of the story is very similar... but obviously we put our own spin on it," he says.

"There are little winks to the audience who are fans of the original who will probably find it pretty satisfying."

The production of the film was essentially a road trip in itself. Filming started in the North Island, and the small cast and crew made its way down to the South.

For 19-year-old Rolleston, these are happy memories, and the release of this film is a welcome milestone.

His road to recovery following a horror car smash last July has been a long and hard one.

"My speech is improving by the day. Normal conversation is therapy on its own," he told Newshub.

He says he owes a lot of his recovery to the people of New Zealand.

"It's been awesome having them by my side - knowing this country has my back and is supporting me 100 percent."
