Donnie Darko could be making a comeback.

The director of 2001 cult classic film Donnie Darko has hinted another sequel could be in the works, with him back at the helm.

In an interview with HMV.com, Richard Kelly said he believed there were still stories left to explore in the Darko world.

"I think there's something much bigger and more ambitious to do in that universe," he said.

But Kelly said a follow-up to the psychological thriller would be expensive, so would be a while off.

"I want to make sure we've got the budget to do it justice and not to compromise anything. Another story in this world needs resources and we need to have that in place. I need to get my next film out of the gate and then we can go back and look at it."

Donnie Darko stars Jake and Maggie Gyllenhaal, Drew Barrymore and the late Patrick Swayze.

Kelly was not involved with the 2009 follow-up S. Darko, which received largely negative reviews.

In an interview with the Independent in December, Kelly said S. Darko had been a "nightmare" for him, because people assumed he had either authorised it or endorsed it.

"None of that is true. They wanted me to be involved, I refused and asked them to not make the film."

He said he had never seen S. Darko.
