JK Rowling has broken Harry Potter fans' hearts, denying rumours the original films' key cast - Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint - would return for a new movie.

Rumours swirled on Friday that Warner Bros had been talking to the actors about reprising their roles for a screen adaption of stage play Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.

Journalist Jim Hill, relying on sources in the film departments at Disney and Universal, said during the Unofficial Universal Orlando Podcast: "I have heard that Warner Bros has actually had conversations with [Emma Watson], with Rupert [Grint], and, of course, Daniel [Radcliffe] about Cursed Child, because they want this to be, for lack of a better term, Harry Potter: The Force Awakens."

He continued: "They want this trilogy of movies to have the actors that we know and love from the original films, that we watched grow up, as adults.

"And, of course, they're hiring a bunch of new, younger actors to play their children with the hope that, if we can lean on JK [Rowling], maybe there'll be The Cursed Adolescent."

However, Rowling took to Twitter to shoot the rumour down, and unleash a savage swipe at new US president Donald Trump at the same time.

"I know a lot of people are looking for reasons to be cheerful today, but there is NO TRUTH to the rumour about a #CursedChild movie trilogy," Ms Rowling wrote on Twitter on Friday (local time).

"This. Is. Not.True."
