Superhero franchise Marvel has teamed up with video game developer Square Enix to form a partnership that will result in the creation of a number of console games set in the Marvel universe.

The two companies shared teasers of the multi-game partnership on Thursday, but it appears as though no fans made the connection before Friday's announcement.

The first project to be worked on has been announced as The Avengers Project - and while further details about the game are vague, the have hinted at an open-world-style game.

"The Avengers Project is being designed for gamers worldwide and will be packed with all the characters, environments and iconic moments that have thrilled long-time fans of the franchise," a description of the game reads.

"Featuring a completely original story, it will introduce a universe gamers can play in for years to come."

The trailer accompanying the announcement is also extremely ambiguous, giving nothing away in regards to a potential storyline or game-play features.

Final Fantasy creators Square Enix will be working with two other game developer companies - Crystal Dynamics and Eidos Montreal, both of which are known for their expansive universe style - to produce The Avengers Project and other titles.

The game is expected to be released at some point in 2018, with further titles to be unveiled after that.
