Microsoft has cancelled their much-hyped upcoming game Scalebound, which was set for release this year on Xbox One and PC.

The ambitious game was being designed by renowned action game developer PlatinumGames (Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, Vanquish) and was unveiled at E3 2014.

Scalebound was to put players in control of a man named Drew, who would battle enemies with the aid of his dragon companion, Thuban.

"After careful deliberation, Microsoft Studios has come to the decision to end production for Scalebound," a statement from the company reads.

"We're working hard to deliver an amazing line-up of games to our fans this year, including Halo Wars 2, Crackdown 3, State of Decay 2, Sea of Thieves and other great experiences."

Hideki Kamiya, the director of Resident Evil 2, Devil May Cry and Bayonetta, was the brains behind Scalebound, and Microsoft had promoted the game heavily.

Industry sources claim the title faced significant troubles during development and that Microsoft and PlatinumGames were parting ways over the trouble.

Scalebound was originally set for a 2016 release - a year in which PlatinumGames took a hammering over the only three other games it released; Star Fox Zero, Star Fox Guard and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutants in Manhattan.
