Oscar darlings still in Kiwi cinemas

With the Oscar nominations out this week, you may be asking yourself: 'Can I still see any of these awesome awards-worthy films?' The answer is hell yes.

Here's a list of Best Picture and nominated performances currently on the big screen in New Zealand.

Kicking off the list of big-hitters on full release across the country is the record-setting musical La La Land - nods for both the leads and a gazillion other nominations, which make this film a must-see on the big screen.

Lion is still screening, with Dev Patel's performance getting a nod for Best Supporting Actor.

Moonlight has an awesome eight nominations - see it for all those reasons and more, including Mahershala Ali and Naomie Harris's Best Supporting outings.

Hidden Figures also gets a tonne of nominations, with strong showings in the acting categories.

Arrival was released last year but is still having a few showings in the main centres, and so worth seeing on the big screen. Up for huge tally of eight nominations, it also gets one of the glaring snubs of the awards - no Amy Adams for Best Actress, a nod she so richly deserves for this amazing film.

Hacksaw Ridge sees Mel Gibson back in Hollywood favour, edited by Kiwi John Gilbert, who gets an Oscar nomination for his efforts; but if you want to catch the film in a cinema you'll have to rush to Whangamata in Coromandel to see it!

The same goes for the wonderful Taylor Sheridan film Hell or High Water, only on in Wanaka.

And of course, nominated for Best Animated Feature and Best Song, Moana has dominated the school holiday box office and is still on full release across the country.

There are two big awards heavyweights about to open here - Manchester by the Sea is up for six awards and has just opened, with Denzel Washington's record-setting seventh Oscar nomination for his performance in Fences opening here on February 9.

Natalie Portman's nominated Lead Actress outing in Jackie opened here last week, and you can also watch the fabulous Golden Globe-winning performance from French actress Isabelle Huppert in Elle - but only in in select cinemas in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch, and you better hurry.

Get thee to a cinema!!

The 89th Academy Awards are held in Hollywood on Sunday, February 26 (Monday, NZ time)
