Oscars sets record with six black actor nominees

The Academy Award nominations are in, and as expected, the musical La La Land leads the tally. The film has been nominated in 14 of the award ceremony's 24 categories. It now shares the record for most nominations for a single film with Titanic (1997) and All About Eve (1950).

La La Land also took in a record-breaking haul of awards at this year's Golden Globes, winning every single category it was nominated in.

Arrival and Moonlight have also raked in the Oscar nominations, with eight each. That's followed by six apiece for Lion and Hacksaw Ridge.

The Oscars have been increasingly criticised for lacking diversity. The past two years have seen #OscarsSoWhite trending, with criticism from audiences and industry alike.

This year, a record six black actors have been nominated, including in the best actor and best actress categories. Moonlight, a "portrait of contemporary African-American life", has been nominated in eight categories.

Barry Jenkins, the film's writer and director has now made history as the first black writer-director nominated for the trio of best director, screenplay and picture.

There are a full nine nominees for the category of best film this year, including Kiwi-edited war film Hacksaw Ridge. The film's editing even gets its own specific nod, with New Zealander John Gilbert up for an award for his work on the film.

Gilbert's show reel also includes work on The Lord of the Rings, The World's Fastest Indian and Matariki.

Hacksaw Ridge has some stiff competition in the best film category. Other nominees are Arrival, Fences, Hell or High Water, Hidden Figures, La La Land, Lion, Manchester by the Sea and Moonlight.

Disney animation Moana, which stars Kiwis and was written in part by Taika Waititi, is up for best animated feature film, alongside Zootopia, My Life as a Zuccini and The Red Turtle.

Weta Digital's work on The Jungle Book has also earned a nomination.

But not all of this year's critically acclaimed films made the list.

Despite being tipped by some for a nomination, documentary Tickled has missed out. The film, by David Farrier and Dylan Reeve, is an investation into an unsettling figure involved in the world of competitive tickling. Savage Garden singer-turned-film-reviewer Darren Hayes tweeted that neither of the year’s best documentaries were nominated – Tickled and Weiner.

The awards ceremony takes place on February 26.
