Trailer: Will Gary of the Pacific be the best NZ film of 2017?

The first look at an eagerly awaited Kiwi comedy teases a hilarious film that's light-hearted and good-natured but doesn't shy away from bad taste humour.

Gary of the Pacific is the first feature film from the Downlow Concept, the collective behind 7 Days, Hounds and two winning 48Hours shorts, Brown Peril and Only Son.

The film stars Josh Thomson as Gary, of the Pacific; a romantic real estate agent who unwittingly becomes the chief of a sinking Pacific island, all while trying to pull off his bride-to-be's dream wedding.

Thomson has a big year ahead of him as the recently announced co-host of The Project, TV3' new primetime current affairs-entertainment show.

The 7 Days and Downlow Concept regular's body is the basis for some of the movie trailer's humour, which sees him sport a pair of rather unflattering compression shorts and shows a shot of his bare bottom.

"The compression shorts were interesting," says Thomson.

"I thought I'd disguise my junk but I kind of just Ken Dolled it out of existence. I was sure they'd CGI something in there, but I think they enjoyed leaving it smooth."

Gary of the Pacific also stars Megan Stevenson, Dave Fane, Matt Whelan, Dominic Ona-Ariki, Taofi Mose-Tuiloma and Leigh Hart, and was filmed on location in Rarotonga and New Zealand.

It opens in cinemas on March 16, while The Project will debut in February, screening weeknights on TV3 at 7pm.
