Guns N' Roses: Wellington hat gets the nod from Axl Rose

Guns N' Roses lifted a rain-drenched crowd to its feet at a packed Westpac Stadium last night, playing a rousing, nostalgic set that took many fans back to the band's 1990s heyday.

But there was also a moment of Wellington headwear admiration from frontman Axl Rose, who complimented Duff McKagan on his new hat, saying "Nice lid!" before laughing and walking away.

McKagan had earlier gone shopping with wife, Susan Holmes, and a bodyguard, buying two hats - a bowler and a topper - from the Clockwork Steampunk Emporium in the Old Bank Arcade.

The shop's owner Paula Lester-Garcia didn't recognise the bassist until McKagan said he was a performer and was playing a concert at the stadium.

She asked if he had something to do with Guns N' Roses. McKagan replied yes, he'd been with them for some time.

It wasn't until she looked them up on Wikipedia that she realised who they were.
