Josh Thomson: New Zealand's Pete Helliar?

  • 20/02/2017

On Monday night, Three's much-hyped The Project takes over the 7pm slot, with hosts Kanoa Lloyd, Jesse Mulligan and Josh Thomson.

Adapted from the hit Australian format of the same name, The Project promises "news delivered differently".

Funnyman Thomson will be a big part of what makes it different.

The Hounds and 7 Days star is a seasoned comedian, effectively filling the spot of Rove veteran Pete Helliar.

Ahead of the show's launch, we got Helliar and Thomson together for a chat. A bromance was born.

"This is the New Zealand version of The Project and I'm kind of the New Zealand version of you," says Thomson.

"I feel like I'm looking into a New Zealand mirror," replies Helliar.

"So if there was a movie and I was cast as you, would you be pretty stoked?" asks Josh.

"Yeah absolutely, if I was a Kiwi, you are who I'd want to be. Also, I think it's important to have at least one man of girth on The Project desk," says Helliar.

"I'm flattered that it's you."

Helliar also gives Thomson tips on how to smoothly transition from serious news to a funny joke, and how to properly pronounce "The Project".

While reminiscing about his favourite bits from The Project over in Australia, Helliar mentions an interview with Amy Schumer, pashing Robbie Williams and trying hard not to look at Kim Kardashian's breasts.

The Project screens every weeknight on Three, starting on Monday at 7pm. Check out the video above for more of Thomson's chat with Helliar.
