Kiwi editor John Gilbert wins Oscar for Hacksaw Ridge

John Gilbert has won an Academy Award for Best Achievement in Film Editing for his work on war drama Hacksaw Ridge.

He has also won a BAFTA, Hollywood Film Award and Satellite Award for the film, which is directed by Mel Gibson.

Gilbert received an Oscar nomination in the 2002 for The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, but Hacksaw Ridge marks his first win.

Appearing emotional onstage, Gilbert clutched the trophy and said he hoped his family was watching back home in New Zealand.

Speaking to Newshub after his BAFTA win, Gilbert said he was proud of the win, but wished Hacksaw Ridge had won in other categories too.

"Filmmaking is a team effort and everyone else did fabulous work which enabled me to look good - especially Mel Gibson and [actor] Andrew Garfield," he says.

Hacksaw Ridge has also won Best Achievement in Sound Mixing.
