Kiwi John Wick fans get justice with NZ release date

Diehard New Zealand fans made some noise, and have made themselves heard - John Wick: Chapter 2 will get a Kiwi release after all.

The barnstorming sequel  to the 2014 cult hit John Wick was unleashed in cinemas across Planet Earth nigh on two weeks ago. Well, when I say 'Planet Earth' I mean a Planet Earth that did NOT appear to include New Zealand, nor it's less developed Southern Hemisphere neighbour, Australia.

Upon immediate investigation and subsequent confirmation, the true horror was revealed - NO New Zealand/Australia release date had been set for the film, and far more worryingly, NO plans afoot to release it AT ALL.

Unimaginable, and unacceptable.

So where do we go to give voice to our dismay?  The internet, of course.

A desperate appeal on Facebook for Wick fans to unite and make some noise was greeted with exactly that.

Well your voice, my voice, and everybody's voice was heard, and the lovely folk at eOne (Entertainment One) Australia/NZ listened.

On Friday afternoon they confirmed to me that John Wick: Chapter 2 will get a New Zealand (and Australia) big screen theatrical release after all.

So that's the good news.  Here's the not-quite-as-good news.  It won't roll out until May 11.

No question, right now, that feels like a lifetime away.  But at least we get it!  And their reasons are sound enough, telling me that was the earliest date they could secure the greatest number of free screens across the country, to ensure as many fans could access it as possible.

So, the power of the people is righteous and it is awesome, but not without its limits; but hey, still awesome nevertheless!

Roll on May 11, and remember, he's the man, the myth, the legend, and he's not very good at retiring (but he's working on it).

John Wick: Chapter 2 opens in cinemas across NZ on May 11.
