Matilda the Musical heading for Auckland

Something a little bit naughty is coming this way with Matilda the Musical looking set to open in Auckland in August.

Auckland Live, which manages the Aotea Centre and Civic Theatre, has begun dropping hints on its social media accounts, saying "A little GENIUS is coming to Auckland this August".

The accompanying videos feature a girl in school uniform walking along Auckland's waterfront and the pink cycleway, and a short snippet of a song from the show.

Auckland Live would not confirm the show when approached by Newshub on Friday, saying only in a statement: "We have an exciting announcement on the way.  We will contact you when there is more information so keep your eyes peeled."

The last stop for the Australian production of Matilda is an Adelaide run beginning in May, after which it is expected to make its way across the Tasman.

The British Royal Shakespeare Company's retelling of the Roald Dahl classic features music by Australian comedian Tim Minchin.

Matilda tells the story of a precocious, smart girl whose talents go unrecognised by her self-absorbed parents. When she is sent to a school run by the terrifying Miss Trunchbull, she discovers she has the ability to move things with her mind, and is able to wreak all sorts of havoc.

The musical debuted on the West End in 2011 to rave reviews and went on to win seven Olivier Awards. The Broadway production scooped five Tony Awards in 2013.

It adds to a busy year of musical theatre for Auckland, which will also see overseas productions of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat in April and West Side Story in June, as well as local amateur productions including Sister Act, Nine and Bring It On.
