Monday night's Oscars Best Picture mix-up may be one of the biggest announcement errors, but it certainly wasn't the first.
In fact, New Zealand had its own cringeworthy finale fail in 1984 at the Miss New Zealand pageant. Our own 'envelope gate' was caught on camera and archived for the annals of history.
On live TV, host Peter Sinclair announced the wrong winner when he read the announcement card in the wrong order.
"Ladies and gentlemen it's time now for me to announce the runners up in the Miss New Zealand contest, and then the winner," Sinclair said.
He announces Miss Auckland - Barbara McDowell - as the second runner up, announces Miss Hawke's Bay as the first, then, with as much poise as he can muster, says: "And now ladies and gentlemen I have a most embarrassing task to perform.
"I have just read the list from the top down instead of from the bottom up."
He reads out the correct order naming McDowell as the winner, and the audience cheers. McDowell looks stunned as the runner up sash is whisked off her and replaced with the winner's ribbon.
Meanwhile Sinclair provides commentary on the correction. "Obviously overcome at this sudden change of fortune," he says, as the first part-Samoan woman is named Miss New Zealand.
A similarly awkward and hilarious moment happened in 2015 at the Miss Universe pageant when host Steve Harvey misread his cue card and announced the winner as Miss Columbia, before correctly naming Miss Philippines.
After a long pause, and looking very awkward, Harvey said: "I have to apologise".
The moment quickly became a popular internet meme, with one video making it appear like an episode of popular awkward sitcom Curb Your Enthusiasm.
On Monday in the US (local time) the firm responsible for counting the Oscars ballots apologised for the La La Land blunder, confirming that presenters Faye Dunaway and Warren Beatty were handed the wrong envelope.
"We appreciate the grace with which the nominees, the Academy, ABC, and Jimmy Kimmel handled the situation," it said in a statement.
