Pt Chevalier man shell-shocked in AM Show win

Can you name nine subjects taught in New Zealand schools in 10 seconds?

They say the pressure of being quizzed in a live broadcast is enough to make anyone fumble, but on Wednesday morning Dale Barnes kept his composure and nailed The AM Show's 9 in 10 competition.

At the Auckland's beach suburb of Pt Chevalier Mr Barnes was out training, but nothing could have prepared him for what was about to happen.

"Are you feeling relaxed?" host Duncan Garner asked.

"I hope I don't make an arse of myself," Mr Barnes replied.

Quite the opposite - despite appearing nervous, Mr Barnes churned out a list of school subjects before the buzzer.

The AM Show studio erupted with applause, but Mr Barnes stood still, unemotional, before asking: "Are you for real? Oh my God!"

His trainer jumped in for a congratulatory hug, and Mr Barnes eventually cracked a smile.

Mr Barnes told Newshub this morning that he was nervous about taking part in the segment, as he "had seen so many people crumble on it".

He said the win was down to talking to his 14-year-old about his school subjects - meaning his son was taking much of the credit.

"It's reflected glory," Mr Barnes laughed.

Mr Barnes also said that another positive has come out of the win - he'll never complain about having to go to an early morning bootcamp again.
