Jeffrey Dean Morgan has responded to claims that a T-shirt referencing his The Walking Dead character is racist, calling them "stupid".

International retailer Primark pulled the product from sale over the words on it reading "Eeny, Meeny, Miny, Moe," as Morgan's character Negan did on the TV show, before choosing someone to murder.

Walking Dead T-shirt slammed as racist

In The Walking Dead the phrase is followed by "catch a tiger by its toe", but the rhyme's historical association with the word "n**ger" has offended some people.

"Holy crap, people are stupid," Morgan said on Twitter.

UK publication The Star spoke to Methodist minister Ian Lucraft, one of the people who complained to Primark over the T-shirt.

"It was fantastically offensive, and I can only assume that no one in the process of ordering it knew what they were doing or were aware of its subliminal messages," says Mr Lucraft.

"It is directly threatening of a racist assault, and if I were black and were faced by a wearer I would know just where I stood... [the] image relates directly to the practice of assaulting black people in America."

AMC, the US network that broadcasts The Walking Dead, has not commented on the issue.
