Actresses in their 30s don't eat - Emma Thompson

British actress Emma Thompson has hit out at Hollywood for the pressure it puts on female actors to be thin.

During an interview on a Swedish talk show Thompson said she almost quit the film Brideshead Revisited after another actor was asked by the film's producers to lose weight.

While she didn't name the actress, she described her appearance as "wonderful" and "exquisite".

"I said to them; if you speak to her about this again on any level I will leave the picture. You are never to do that."

"It's evil what's going on out there and it's getting worse."

Brideshead Revisited, a 2008 film adaptation of Evelyn Waugh's novel of the same name starred Thompson along with Ben Whishaw, Hayley Atwell, Felicity Jones and Greta Scacchi.

During the interview Thompson joked that Hollywood's obsession over weight prevented her from living there.

"I never moved to the US. I couldn't. Can you imagine? Every time I go to LA I think, 'Oh God, I am too fat to go there."

Thompson also criticised the fashion industry, and said the French fashion industry said they would get rid of size zero - but hadn't.

"There are some subjects you have to keep making noise about because it's so tedious, and it's gone on an on."

Thompson is an outspoken advocate for women's rights and in a letter to The Guardian last year she pushed for London voters to back the Women's Equality party in the city's mayoral election.

She said she "really did not want to die before closing the pay gap which stands, in our great and supposedly modern capital city, at 23 percent."
