Arnold Schwarzenegger taunts Donald Trump: 'You got swamped' in the ratings

Serial action hero and former California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has used US President Donald Trump's low approval ratings as fresh ammunition in the pair's long-running feud.

The latest comments come after Mr Trump's approval ratings dropped eight points to 37 percent in the time since his inauguration, with the portion of people who disapproved of him being in the White House rising to 58 percent.

Mr Trump has previously made fun of Schwarzenegger's ratings as host of The New Celebrity Apprentice, a show that he remains an executive producer on and famously used to host himself.

He has repeatedly made spiteful remarks about the Schwarzenegger-hosted version's ratings - even jokingly asking a crowd at last month's National Prayer Breakfast to "pray for Arnold" - but now the Hollywood star has been able to take his own pop at Mr Trump in a Twitter video.

"Oh Donald, the ratings are in - and you got swamped. Wow, now you're in the 30s?" he asked with fake incredulity, before zeroing in on the Trump administration's plans for a budget cut that would see a number of free services scrapped.

"But what do you expect? I mean, when you take away after-school programs from children and Meals on Wheels from the poor people, that's not what you call 'making America great again'.

"I mean, who is advising you? Let me give you some advice: Go to a middle school, to Hart Middle School right in Washington, six miles away from the White House. I'll take you there so you can see the fantastic work that they're doing for these children."

Schwarzenegger's tweet had been liked 7800 times and shared 3500 in the eight hours after being posted, and his use of the phrase 'swamped' was a reference to what Mr Trump had said about his ratings on The New Celebrity Apprentice.

Those ratings were so bad that he has now revealed he will not be renewing his contract with NBC for another season, confirming that he was cutting ties with the programme.

"I loved every second of working with NBC and [creator] Mark Burnett. Everyone - from the celebrities to the crew to the marketing department - was a straight 10, and I would absolutely work with all of them again on a show that doesn't have this baggage," he said.

Fans told him they liked the show, but "when people found out that Mr Trump was still involved as executive producer and was still receiving money from the show, then half the people [started] boycotting it", he told Empire magazine.

"With Trump being involved in the show people have a bad taste and don't want to participate as a spectator or sponsor or in any other way support the show. It's a very divisive period right now and I think the show got caught up in all that division."

Schwarzenegger's departure makes a new Apprentice series unlikely.
