Lorde has upped the ante on her teasers for what's believed to be her next album, dropping several clues around Auckland on Wednesday night.

At one location in the CBD, the words "GREEN LIGHT" were projected on a brick wall, and a very short audio clip played of what's believed to be her new single.

At the intersection of Ponsonby and Karangahape Rds, dozens of people gathered around a small white hatchback with strobing green light and smoke pouring from the windows.

A small sign on the ground read cryptically: "I do my makeup in somebody else's car."

At one point a tow truck pulled up, however the driver allayed fears he was there to remove Lorde's installation: "I just saw it and wanted to see what was going on!"

An estimated crowd of hundreds also gathered at Hamilton Beach in Herne Bay, the third location indicated by Lorde in a map she tweeted earlier on Wednesday.

However, after more than 20 minutes of people milling around, the popstar tweeted that she'd sent them to the wrong beach.

"HERNE BAY BEACH ACTUALLY LOL!! GO DOWN THERE," she said.

Fans were greeted by a green-lit beach and another sign saying "She thinks you love the beach, you're such a damn liar."

It's speculated the teasers are pointing to an upcoming album, which would be her first since Pure Heroine in 2013.

An ad, which aired on Three on Monday, showed a 14-second long video with music playing in the background, with March 3 pointed out as a day to watch.

She's also launched a new website, imwaitingforit.com.
