Game of Thrones season seven launches in New Zealand on July 17

Ed Sheeran is the latest musician to land a guest starring role in hit fantasy TV show Game of Thrones.

The 'I See Fire' singer is a favourite of Maisie Williams, who plays Arya Stark on the HBO show, and producers say they wanted him to thrill her on set.

"For years we were trying to get Ed Sheeran on the show to surprise Maisie and this year we finally did it," said Game of Thrones showrunner David Benioff.

"A lot of [music artists] say they would they would like to [be on the show], and then we tell them [shooting a scene] is so boring," added his partner Dan Weiss.

The producers said Sigur Rós star Jónsi Birgisson wanted to leave early after acting in a season three scene, not realising he had to stick around as a background actor for several more days.

"[Sheeran] was a super good sport about it," says Weiss.

The showrunners made the comments during a panel at the South by Southwest festival in Texas.

Game of Thrones will return to small screens around the world in July.
