Game of Thrones season 7 teaser trailer released

The latest teaser to get Game of Thrones fans' tongues wagging ahead of the TV series' seventh season was released by HBO on Friday morning (NZ time).

The new trailer doesn't give away a whole lot, as expected - but it does show each of the series' top dogs - Daenerys, Cersei and Jon Snow - walking through their respective chambers.

James' 1990 hit 'Sit Down' plays in the background, likely as an allusion to sitting on the Iron Throne.

The camera stays on each of them as they are seated, and as the music fades out, Cersei lets out a frosty breath that serves as a symbol that winter has truly come. The last few frames of the trailer zoom out to reveal the face of a White Walker.

The seventh season of Game of Thrones starts much later in the year than previous seasons, and will see cameos from British pop singer Ed Sheeran and UFC superstar Conor McGregor, which are expected to attract a slew of new viewers.

Earlier this month, hundreds of thousands of viewers watched a livestream of ice melting in an excruciating premiere date reveal, followed by a brief teaser trailer with graphics representing the Westeros house sigils.

The season seven premiere date is July 17 in New Zealand.
